Dr. TaTanisha Parker, LPC-S, NCC, CSC & Dr. Ashley Sutton, LPC-S, NCC

Group therapy is a mechanism of change by developing, exploring and examining interpersonal relationships within the group. The help takes the form of relating personal experiences and listening to and accepting others' experiences. The facilitators are trained to understand the emerging interactions, elicit feedback from the members about these behaviors, and help to initiate a correction in the interaction through these insights.

In a professionally operated support group members provide each other with various types of help for a shared issue. The help takes the form of relating personal experiences and listening to and accepting others' experiences. Therapy involves simultaneous interaction with people typically outside the client's social and familial network: relative strangers.

Group therapy can also be a source of support for kids dealing with grief, bullying, anxiety and depression, and other mental health issues. Group therapy gives therapists an opportunity to see how kids relate to one another in a group setting. For kids struggling with social anxiety, poor social skills, or inattentiveness, the group setting offers the therapist a chance to help kids work through their obstacles with other kids as they occur.
